What is Summer Energy?

As of now, there are 160+ retail energy providers registered with the Public Utility Commission of Texas. In this guide, we’re going to take a look at just one of those REPs: Summer Energy.

Because most of Texas is in a deregulated electricity market, shopping for electricity plans can feel like a burden.

You may (or may not) be wondering, “What is a deregulated electricity market?

In a deregulated market, you can choose which utility company you want to purchase electricity from. Individual companies can sell electricity directly to customers.

But how do you know which electricity plan is right for you?

That answer depends on a lot of factors.

Keep reading to help you find out if Summer Energy is the right electric plan for you.

What Makes Summer Energy Different Than All The Other REPs?

It can be overwhelming to search through hundreds of potential energy plans.

So, what makes Summer Energy stand out?

Summer Energy was honored to be The Energy Professionals Association (TEPA) supplier of the year for 2017.

This award is given to electricity providers with a “comprehensive, innovative, and strategic vision for deregulated electricity” markets.

A TEPA award looks at:

  • The company’s customer service reputation both for customers and employees.
  • Companies that help build a trustworthy and competitive retail electric provider marketplace.

In a deregulated market, a TEPA award is good news.

How To Switch Electric Companies In Texas?

During the enrollment process, there are three methods to choose from to switch to Summer Energy:

  • Standard Switch - If you haven't moved locations, and currently have electric service with another provider and are not under contract, the switch can occur within 7 days or less.
  • Self-Directed Switch - Use this if you currently have an energy plan with another provider and you want to start on a specific date. You can start a new plan that same day or the next day. Your local utility company may assess a fee for this service.
  • New Service - If you currently do not have an electric plan, you can select the same day switch or next-day depending on what meter technology you have. Your local utility company may assess a fee for this service.

Summer Energy Rates

Energy usage is measured in kWh (kilowatt-hours). When looking for good rates, you look for kWh of energy usage.

So when you’re thinking about your household, you want the best electricity plan for you.

For Summer Energy, there is typically a base charge of $4.89 per billing period.

Each zip code is different and it can be very tiresome to read the terms of service for each potential plan.

Summer Energy Reviews

There are so many ways to view a company. There are hundreds and thousands of different experiences to sift through.

So, where to start?

First, are they reputable with the Better Business Bureau?

The BBB gives customers a reason to trust a company and that they are what they say they are:

  • They’re real (not a fraud).
  • They’re providing truthful advertising.
  • They’re providing accurate information before a customer buys their product.

Summer Energy is an accredited business and is rated an A. This is similar to saying Summer Energy received a 94-96.99% rating out of 100%.

This takes into account lots of things such as (but not limited to):

  • A business’s complaint history with the BBB
  • The amount of time in business
  • Any advertising issues that are known to the BBB
  • Transparent business practices

The BBB is a good start to learn whether a company is reputable and is being transparent.

Next is the difficult one to pin down: consumer ratings.

Everyone comes into a situation with a different mindset. Every experience is different. Some are great, some are not so great.

And people love to talk about those two extremes. Some will go out of their way to share a negative experience or a very positive one.

And negative reviews can be perceived to be more valuable than positive ones.

Here are a few places to look at reviews of Summer Energy:

Let’s take a look at Cameron’s experience with Summer Energy:

Cameron is thinking of moving to Texas from a state with a regulated electricity market.

He’s considering all the different options someone looks for when moving to a new place, including:

  1. Housing prices
  2. School districts for his children
  3. Commute times to major job hubs
  4. Tax rates
  5. What the city culture looks like
  6. Utility costs… and that’s where he gets lost in the data.

The rates and the many different electricity plans available can be overwhelming.

Cameron doesn’t know how to find out which rates are good for him. Or which cities have higher rates than others.

Each family, home, business, and location will have a different energy plan.

The plan that is right from one person to the next will vary depending on:

  • How many people live in your household
  • How much electricity your family uses on average
  • If you stream media on the internet?
  • If you are a gamer
  • If your home has low energy usage light bulbs
  • If you use the air conditioner often

So how do you find the best plan for your situation?

Let’s take a look at a few major cities in Texas and compare energy prices for each.

Keep reading below to get an estimated comparison.

Be sure to read the Terms of Service for each plan. You can find this on their website.
